Mells first School Lent Cross Challenge

Mells First School and the communities of Mells and Vobster's Lent Cross Challenge.

The Lent Cross challenge (http://www.bathandwells.org.uk/2018/01/lent-cross-challenge/) was Bath and Wells Anglican diocese 'Go Team' initiative designed to keep the cross at the heart of Easter. It was aimed at children and young people in groups, schools and in the community.

Mells First School and members of the community were really excited about this idea and decided to go one further to design, make crosses and sew them onto cloth. This was transformed into an altar cloth for St Andrews Church in red as it is the colour for Holy Week to represent the blood and sacrifice of Christ.

This altar cloth has both an Holy Week theme with the crosses, the red cloth and also a look towards Easter as the three larger white empty crosses tell the story of the risen Christ . The passion altar cloth will be on the altar until Holy Saturday and on display in the Lady Chapel for two weeks.

The children designed the crosses and glued their decorations to the felt.

The altar cloth was sewn together

The decorations were secured with stitches, and the crosses were sewn onto the cloth.

The result: a wonderful vibrant Holy Week altar cloth for St Andrews.
