Safeguarding

Safeguarding in the church community – making our churches safe for children, young people and vulnerable adults – is everyone’s responsibility.

In the Church of England, safeguarding is the Church's commitment to promote a safe environment and culture for everyone, especially children and vulnerable adults. This involves preventing abuse, protecting those at risk, responding effectively to concerns or allegations of abuse, and providing care for victims and survivors. Key aspects include safer recruitment for church roles, promoting a culture of vigilance, establishing clear policies and procedures, and ensuring accountability throughout the Church.

What safeguarding involves:

  • Promoting a safer culture: Creating an environment where everyone feels safe and protected.
  • Preventing abuse: Taking action to stop abuse before it happens.
  • Protecting those at risk: Implementing procedures to keep children and vulnerable adults safe from harm.
  • Responding to concerns: Handling allegations and safeguarding issues promptly and effectively.
  • Supporting survivors: Offering care and support to those who have experienced abuse.

How the Church of England does this:

  • Safer Recruitment

Implementing careful processes for appointing people to roles, especially those who work with children and vulnerable adults. It means ensuring that everyone who works with children or vulnerable people has a DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service), together with a clear route for people to report any concerns and that have appointed someone to be responsible for safeguarding across our five parishes.

  • Policies and Procedures

Developing national policies, such as the "Promoting a Safer Church" policy, and ensuring they are followed by dioceses and parishes.

  • Vigilance and Training

Providing guidance and resources to help Church members and clergy understand their responsibilities and act appropriately.

  • Accountability

Establishing systems and individuals (like Safeguarding Officers) responsible for ensuring that standards are met and issues are addressed.
